History repeatedly points to the importance of great storytelling in chronicling and influencing human affairs. Even today, a powerful, authentic narrative can foster trust and respect between disparate cultures and lessen cultural prejudice. No medium is as effective at communicating the range and diversity of the world's cultures as the medium of film. Lately however, shifting economic conditions and the dominance of American film have threatened the fate of world cinema, leaving developing film industries in a situation where funding sources have all but disappeared and worldwide distribution channels have collapsed. Enter the Global Film Initiative.

Founded in 2002 with the mission of promoting cross-cultural understanding through cinema, the Initiative's four complementary programs support the growth of vibrant, global filmmaking communities and introduce audiences to the remarkable stories told in every corner of the world.

GLOBAL LENS

The Global Lens film series can be seen in more than 35 locations across the United States and Canada, and is also available in home video, television, educational, theatrical, internet and airline markets. Since its launch, the series has provided a platform for exceptional storytelling and opened a window into the diverse world in which we live. Find more about our current film series here.

THE ACQUISITIONS PROGRAM

The Acquisitions Program acquires up to ten narrative films a year from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East; all have made a significant impact on the international film community. THE EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Education Program presents free educational screenings of Global Lens films for students in locations where the series is shown and also publishes free, innovative learning resources that explore social, cultural and historical themes introduced by films.
